What Teaching Methods Motivate Students to Enjoy Learning?
September 29th, 2009
Main Issues to Address
- How do we create excitement in the classroom?
- How do we convince "sage on the stage" teachers to see the light?
- How can we increase student connections to content?
- How do we find out what motivates students?
For any of the above issues you would like to comment on, add action steps below to address the problem in a real-world context. These action steps can be as small-scale as working one-on-one with a student or teacher or as large-scale as proposals that could lead to broad institutional changes. Large or small, you can have an impact on this issue and influence others to do the same!

- Be excited about what you're teaching (or, at least, pretend to be). Your excitement rubs off on your students

- Develop and nurture strong relationships with these teachers- show them that you are patient and there to help, not change them
- Do model lessons with their students- swap classes, or lead the way in a larger setting- too often these teachers retreat to the line of "that won't work with my kids"....show them it WILL and their students will love it

- Utilize project-based learning that allows students to have more REAL choice- let them choose their product, let them customize the way this final product is created and delivered.

- ASK YOUR STUDENTS! And don't be afraid of the answers- embrace them
- Do an assessment of each students intelligence from MI theory (learning style). Create projects and activities that emphasize each style throughout the year. If students are able to express themselves in the modality most comfortable to them, they will become more engaged in the classroom.
